The exact date of Vesākha varies according to the various lunar calendars used in different traditions. In Theravada countries following the Buddhist calendar, it falls on a full moon Uposatha day, typically in the 5th or 6th lunar month. Vesākha Day in China is on the eighth of the fourth month in the Chinese lunar calendar. The date varies from year to year in the Western Gregorian calendar, but usually falls in April or May. In leap years Vesākha is celebrated in June.

State Wesak Festival will be held near Dalada Maligawa on 6th

year’s State Vesak Festival will be held on the 6th of this month.
Deputy Minister M.K.A.D.S.Gunawardena has called on the Buddhists to
commemorate peacefully the Wesak Week which begins today.
The Deputy Minister said that it is hoped to hold the National Wesak Festival near the historic Sri Dalada Maligawa, based on the instructions of the Mahanayakes of the three Nikayas and under the patronage of the President. He said these activities will be carried out under the guidance of Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne who is also theBuddha Sasana Minister. He called on all Buddhist to hoist the Buddhist flag in their houses. The Deputy Minister reminded that the Liquor bars will be kept closed from the 4th to the 6th of this month.
The Deputy Minister expressed these views at a media gathering at the Prime Minister’s office on the completion of the 2600th Sambuddhatava Jayanthi which falls on Wesak Full Moon Poya Day. The State Wesak Festival will begin with a mass Sil Campaign with the participation of about 5000 Buddhist devotees. Arrangements have been made to hold Wesak Bakthi Gee recitals and lantern pageants, in addition to the issue of a commemorative stamp on behalf of the Sambuddhatva Jayanthi. A Sri Dalada Pada Yathra will be held in the Kandy City. In addition to transport facilities, maximum security will also be provided for the Wesak Festival.
A National Wesak Week starting from today has also been announced. It will continue until the 8th of this month. The Ven. Hanguranketha Dheerananda Thera, Prime Minister’s Secretary S. Amarasekara and Commissioner General for Buddhist Affairs Chandraprema Gamage participated in the media briefing.
